Three Jesuits Profess First Vows |
 |
| Alejandro Olayo Méndez, Matthew Kunkel, and Javier Díaz Díaz kneel as they profess their vows. |
Three Oregon Province men, Francisco Javier Díaz Díaz, Matthew Joseph Kunkel and J. Alejandro Olayo Méndez, knelt before the Lord in the presence of their friends, family and Jesuit brothers at St. Ignatius Church in Portland and professed their first vows in the Society Aug 14.
The Mass and vow ceremony are part of an entire "Vow Weekend" that the Society celebrates for men at the completion of their time in the Novitiate - their first two years spent in the Society.
Jesuits traditionally profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience on or near the Feast of the Assumption. In 1534, in a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady, Ignatius of Loyola and his companions at the University of Paris professed their First Vows at Montmartre, Paris on that feast. At the time of communion, after Peter Favre -- the only one of the original companions ordained at the time -- had received the Eucharist, Ignatius and the others professed their vows and received the Lord as their first act following profession. Jesuits today still profess their vows, both first and final, in this same manner. The one normally receiving the vows is the Provincial Superior, on behalf of the Superior General. After profession of first vows, a Jesuit becomes a scholastic and moves on to his first studies at one of the programs establihsed for the next stage of formation.

55th Annual Seattle Jesuit Club Dinner
More than 100 people attended the 55th annual Seattle Jesuit Club Dinner on February 22, 2004 at the Harbor Club in Bellevue. This wonderful tradition began in 1949 when a group of young Seattle laymen organized an appreciation dinner for the Jesuits assigned to Seattle-Tacoma ministries. During the dinner, families and friends fete the Men of Ignatius and show their gratitude for their teaching and spiritual care to them and their families.
This year's celebration was especially memorable as the group celebrated the 100th birthday of one of the original members, Jim DiJulio, Sr.

"We are so grateful for the many gifts received during the dinner." said Tina O'Brien, Assistant Development Director in the Seattle Office of the Oregon Province. "Proceeds from this dinner will be donated to the senior fund of the Oregon Province and will help us provide care for beloved senior Jesuits. We are forever indebted to planning committee members George Anderson, Brydie Anderson, Brian DiJulio, George DiJulio, Jim DiJulio, Fr. Peter Ely, S.J., Mick McHugh, Mud McHugh, Jim Murphy, and Robert Rosellini , as well as everyone who attended and sent gifts." |
