2005 NovicesOregon Province Welcomes Four Men into the Novitiate

On August 20-21, the Oregon Province welcomed four men into the Novitiate of St. Francis Xavier in Portland: George Teodoro of Renton, Washington, Richard Magner of Houston, Texas, Chris Spicer of Seattle, Washington and Marco Cristerna Mata of Monterey, Mexico. As these new companions begin their study and reflection, please join us in prayer for them. May their discernment bring them closer to Christ and give them the freedom to discover his call in their lives.

Three Oregon Province men, Todd Keogh, West Livaudais and Juan Pablo Marrufo del Toro, knelt before the Lord in the presence of their friends, family and Jesuit brothers at St. Ignatius Church in Portland and professed their first vows in the Society Aug 13, 2005.

The Mass and vow ceremony are part of an entire "Vow Weekend" that the Society celebrates for men at the completion of their time in the Novitiate - their first two years spent in the Society. Jesuits traditionally profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience on or near the Feast of the Assumption.

After profession of first vows, a Jesuit becomes a scholastic and moves on to his first studies at one of the programs established for the next stage of formation. Todd and Juan Pablo will be studying at Loyola University, Chicago, while West will head to Toronto to study at Regis College.

Ordination to priesthood came early for Fr. Denis Donoghue after his mother grew gravely ill. He was ordained on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at his family’s parish, St. Thomas More, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. About 30 Jesuits from the Oregon Province attended the ceremony, including the Provincial, Fr. John Whitney, and his Assistant for Formation, Fr. J.K. Adams.

Fr. Sean Raftis was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 4th, 2005 at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, WA. The following morning he celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving in the student chapel at Gonzaga University, where he spent his regency. Fr. Denis Donoghue also celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving that same day, at St. Aloysius.
